Schold's HSSM is a sealed, high-speed, continuous small media mill designed for deagglomerating, dispersing, and milling a wide range of materials, including paints, inks, dyestuffs, adhesives, food, pharmaceuticals, and other similar fluids.

Operating under internal pressure, the HSSM can handle materials with high viscosities or thixotropy, as well as moisture and air-sensitive materials. The problems of solvent losses and product drying on the filter are eliminated and higher production rates become possible, as opposed to open mills, ball or pebble mills and , in many instances, three-roll mills.

Since the grinding mill is removable, rapid color or medial changes can be effected through the use of a spare chamber.

How it Operates:

The material being processed is pumped into the bottom of the grinding chamber by the feed pump. A variation of the pumping rate will determine the dwell time of the product in the mill and the degree of dispersion.

As the product is forced upward, it passes through the grinding media where it is fluidized by the velocity and agitation. At the same time, milling occurs through a combination of rubbing and impingement between adjacent media particles, and between the media and the agitator discs and the chamber walls.

At the top of the milling area is the drop-out-zone where there are no agitator discs and where most of the grinding media settles back into the milling area.

The continually rising, ground product then passes through the mill filter where any remaining media is final-filtered from the finished product.

  1. Heavy-duty mill frame and motor drive assembly with explosion-proof motors ... standard ... allows easy chamber change.
  2. Three-part bearing and seal housing automatically sets seals, provides easy access for
    service.
  3. Schold’s exclusive, patented rotating filter is mounted on, and rotates with, the shaft. Because it is located below the sealed discharge area in the mill chamber and completely submerged, product drying or air entrapment is eliminated, and the pressurized mill seals are completely protected from the grinding media and unmilled product entering the seal area. The filter is easily accessible through the port for change or service.
  4. The heavy-duty shaft with keyed discs and spacers allows easy interchange. Hardened stainless alloy actuator discs provide fan pattern to grinding media and increase milling
    efficiency.
  5. The finned, jacketed grinding chamber provides a spiral flow for maximum cooling and
    heating.
  6. Grinding media ranges from.50 mm to 2.00 mm steel or ceramic balls or glass beads, depending upon the product being processed, its viscosity and the desired throughput rate.
  7. The variable speed feed pump includes base with strainer and pressure gauge.
  8. In the Schold design, the pressurized seals are located downstream from the patented mill filter. As a result, they need only to be regulated against discharge pressure... not mill chamber pressure ... regardless of the pressure in the milling chamber. Thus, complicated and expensive safety devices to reduce seal damage are eliminated and seal life is extended significantly.
  9. The double mechanical seals are equipped with pressure gauge and regulator for pressurizing with plant air, and an air check valve is also provided to allow continuing operation in case of plant air failure.
  10. The seal/bearing housing is designed to automatically tension the seals on assembly and provides easy access without having to remove the chamber on the mill. Seal face replacement, if necessary, is fast and economical, also.
  11. A motor torque limiter is included to aid in cold start-up.
